Dress Codes Explained
Chances are you recently received an invitation to an event or special occasion that had a dress code indicated. If you're not too sure what that means for your outfit, keep reading.
Starting with the most formal of them all, the White Tie Attire. Think Met Gala and other lavish events alike. This dress code calls for a full length gown in an elegant colour and material, optional gloves, classic jewellery and an elegant clutch for women. For men, wear a full black suit , formal white button up shirt, optional vest, white bow tie and formal footwear like oxfords.
Followed by the Black Tie Attire. A more common dress code used for events and weddings. For women, you can opt for a floor length gown, a formal cocktail dress or suit alike. Style it with jewellery, a clutch and formal heels. Just don't wear anything mini to a black tie event. For men, opt for a classic black suit with a white shirt and bow tie, or mix it up with a velvet dinner jacket and fitted trousers.
Cocktail Attire. Probably the most popular dress code for weddings nowadays. This dress code is the balance between formal and casual. Think midi dresses, slip dresses, jumpsuits or a lovely matching top and skirt set.
For men, go for dress chinos or suit pants with a button up shirt and suit jacket or blazer. Styled with polished semi-formal shoes like oxfords or loafers in neutral colours (black or brown are nice options). Ties are optional.
Smart Casual. This is less formal than Cocktail, but still elevated from casual. Separates seem to be the best option for a smart casual affair, as it gives you flexibility to mix a casual item in your wardrobe with a smart piece. Avoid floor length gowns and over the top glam.
Consider the time, location and occasion. If going to a dinner with a Smart Casual dress code, opt for dress pants with an off the shoulder top and flats or kitten heels (dark colours are an easy go-to for evening events). If heading to a daytime wedding, you can opt for a light coloured midi dress, skirt and top combo or jumpsuit with flats, wedges are kitten heels. For men, chinos or dark wash jeans (no rips) with a short or long sleeved shirt.
When in doubt, throw on a blazer!
